[Listen] Grimace Federation - The Measure in Mixture EP

I'm back to the ye' olde stomping grounds! And it's New Music Friday? Sorry it's something I haven't gotten used to yet. But anyhow, a long time ago in the heyday of SKOA we featured content from this awesome Experimental/Psychadelic/Jazz  rock band from Philadelphia called Grimace Federation. I came across them way back before the days of writing about music due to their association with rapper Aesop Rock who was curated a remix on their debut LP Tasted By Chemists. The group later would release another LP in late 2010 titled On Velvet which also featured another remix from Aesop for the track "Bosico" but after that release over 4 years ago they would disappear into obscurity.

However, it seems like the band is back with a vengeance and have released a new 4 track EP titled The Measure in Mixture through indie hip hop label Rhymesayers Entertainment. The track features 2 new original tracks from the band as well as 2 new remixes from long time collaborator and Rhymesayers artist Aesop Rock.

Rhymesayers have also released a limited edition 12" vinyl of the EP which you can pick up at FifthElementOnline.com. The 12" was pressed on a transparent clear vinyl with a cloudy, white haze effect, and also includes a free digital download card. So if you are like us here at SKOA and love your analog recordings, we highly suggest you head over to Fifth Element and pick up that beautiful record or if you like your music digital (BOB DIGI!), you can grab the EP on the following places: iTunesAmazonGoogle Play or stream it below via Spotify.

Tracklist:

  1. The Measure In Mixture
  2. Strange Hours
  3. Strange Hours (Aesop Rock Remix)
  4. Steamboat (Aesop Rock Remix)

[Sasquatch! Interview] P.O.S Talks Minneapolis Music, His Various Projects, Future Touring and More

Sasquatch! 2013 was a crazy experience. There were so many amazing performances, stunning vistas to bask in and tons of cool people to meet. One of those people was Minneapolis rapper P.O.S, a founding member of the hip-hop collective Doomtree.

After releasing his fourth album We Don't Even Live Here last October, P.O.S (real name Stefon Alexander) was unable to tour due to kidney complications. Now, he's slowly reentering the touring scene. If his performance at Sasquatch! was any indication, he seems ready to get back into it full swing. Before he hit the Honda Bigfoot stage on the final day of the festival, my friend Jon Riggs of MVRemix and I had the chance to sit down and chat with Stefon about a slew of topics. During the 12-minute interview, we discussed the Minneapolis music scene and Doomtree's place within it, the importance of embracing different genres and music styles, as well as P.O.S' numerous side projects and future touring plans. Stream the full interview below.

If you are a huge hip hop fan, you should be tuning into all the great releases Rhymesayers has put out this year like I Self Devine's The Sound of Low Class Amerika, Aesop Rock's latest Skelethon or the recently announced P.O.S. album We Don't Even Live Here. And next month RSE is about to do it again with Brother Ali's forthcoming album Mourning in America and Dreaming in Colour dropping Sept. 18th and produced in it's entirety by Jake One, you may remember him from such tracks as Rick Ross' "3 Kings" featuring Dr. Dre and Jay-Z, producing half of Brother Ali's latest free EP The Bite Marked Heart and his collaborative album with Freeway, The Stimulus Package.

Peep out 2 tracks off Ali's upcoming album, the first being his latest single "Mourning in America" and the latter "Stop The Press" which we featured on June's SKoA blog mixtape. Anything from Ali is always promising and quite enjoyable and these new cuts are no exception. Make sure you pick up the new album when it drops next month which you can pre-order here.

Hip Hop is coming back with a vengence this year! And no, im not talking about your mainstream radio rappers/pop hits. I'm talking the once underground/independent scene which has now broke out into the public eye with artists such as Atmosphere, El-P, Brother Ali, Doomtree and more. Aesop Rock Announces LP #6 'Skelethon" To Release This July On Rhymesayers

Acerizzle aka Aesop Rock (not to be confused with A$AP Rocky) announced today that his 6th solo album Skelethon will be released on July 10th via indie hip hop giant, Rhymesayers. Skelethon marks the first solo LP in five years since Aesop's last album None Shall Pass was released in 07. The album features guest spots from Ace's Hail Mary Mallon Co-horts Rob Sonic & DJ Big Wiz, as well as wifey Allyson Baker of Dirty Ghosts, Hanni El Khatib, Grimace Federation, Nicky Fleming-Yaryan and his Uncluded partner in crime Kimya Dawson. The new album is 100% produced by Aesop Rock which is awesome as Aesop is coming into his own as a producer, but at the same time sad as we won't hear Aesop spit over any El-P or Blockhead beats this time around. Check out the album's full tracklist below.

1. Leisureforce
2. ZZZ Top
3. Cycles To Gehenna
4. Zero Dark Thirty
5. Fryerstarter
6. Ruby '81
7. Crows 1
8. Crows 2
9. Racing Stripes
10. 1,000 O'Clock
11. Homemade Mummy
12. Grace
13. Saturn Missiles

It may be a minute before we get our first taste of Skelethon but this April we will get our first taste of Aesop's upcoming collaboration with singer/songwriter Kimya Dawson, The Uncluded, with Rhymesayers upcoming Record Store Day 2012 Picture Disc. The split 10"vinyl will feature brand new, exclusive and unreleased tracks from Atmosphere called "Someday Soon" and The Uncluded (Aesop Rock x Kimya Dawson) titled "Bats". [Watch] Evidence - "You" (Video)

Enjoy the video for Evidence's new single, "You" straight from the forthcoming album Cats & Dogs , which  drops on September 27th, courtesy of Rhymesayers. The track was produced by legendary hip-hop producer DJ Premier, who you can also find tucked away in the video. The video is pretty trippy. I think I would get confused with that many copies of myself all over the place.

Make sure you pre-order Cats & Dogs if you haven't yet.

[Watch] Evidence's Cats & Dogs Dropping This Fall x "To Be Continued..." (Video)

It's been awhile since we heard any thing from Evidence, who represents 1/2 of Los Angeles Hip Hop group Dilated Peoples, but now the time has finally come for Ev to release his long awaited, highly anticipated second solo full-length, Cats & Dogs, on Rhymesayers Entertainment this Fall, September 27th. This is Ev's first solo effort since releasing 2007's The Weatherman LP (aside from last year's Beatles mixtape I Don't Need Love) and the new album features some exciting guests like Rhymesayer's labelhead Slug of Atmosphere, Raekwon, Aloe Blacc, Prodigy, Aesop Rock, Krondon of Strong Arm Steady and more.

Check out the first taste from the upcoming album with a video for last year's single "To Be Continued..."  as well as the full tracklist and some tour dates with Atmosphere after the jump. I know I'm really looking forward to that Slug and Aesop collaboration.

[Watch & Listen] Grieves - "Blood Poetry" (Video) x "On The Rocks"

The time must be inching closer for Seattle Emcee Grieves' upcoming full length Rhymesayers debut Together/Apart (I say debut because 88 Keys and Counting was a reissue and The Confessions of Mr. Modest was just a bonus EP for the reissue). Grieves is once again teaming up with longtime friend and producer Budo for this latest release as well as producing some tracks himself. Check out the video for the 2nd single from the new album titled "Blood Poetry" produced by Budo in the player above. We really love that track, especially with the funky horn action from Budo.

And when your done with the video, check out another track from the album "On The Rocks" which was produced by Grieves in the player below. If you still haven't got enough, you can also check out the album's first single "Lightspeed." Together/Apart is set to hit shelves on 6/21 via Rhymesayers but you can pick up "Lightspeed" and "Blood Poetry" on iTunes now. Peep the album's tracklisting after the jump and make sure you catch the duo on this year's Warped Tour come Summer.
