diSKOAver weekly: Week of July 8, 2020

Here are 16 different ways I love you extra this week. 💖

OH SHIT LOOK WHO’S LOOKIN’ SNAZZZAAYYYYYYY. Yeah last week during my week of media deprivation I decided to pretty up some things around this web log. You like? 🥰

Also I found
so
much
good
goddamn
music. 🙏🏻

We’re back to 16 tracks a week. That whole doubling up thing was really adorably ambitious of me, especially now that I want to post about all of the things again I don’t want to dread doing this playlist because tbh it’s one of my favorite things to do. It is a labor of love, emphasis on the labor, but you know, whatever.

With that, here are the 16 ways I love you the most this week:

  1. Woodes - ”How Long I’d Wait”

Tumbled into Woodes while checking out last year’s Golden Vessel record (more on him in a few). There’s something so captivating about her that I haven’t been able to put my finger on just yet. She’s practically mystical. Is she secretly a nymph? I need answers. Also she’s got a new song dropping on Friday called “Euphoria” and of course I will make sure you hear it when I do.

  2. Arlo Parks - “Eugene”

When I say that Arlo Parks had me SOBBING for days after I found her that is not even remotely an exaggeration. In addition her penning some of the most deeply personal experiences in a way that will knock the wind out of you, there is something so tenderly piercing about her voice that whatever her words don’t do explicitly her voice is like, “hold up I got this imma make you feel EVERYTHING ok ok”. She recently did a really striking cover of Radiohead’s “Creep” that’s worth checking out, but you definitely have to hear “Black Dog” so you can have a good cry, too.

  3. Nelson Kempf - “Hourglass”

So this is one of 3 tracks that are currently out right now from Nelson Kempf’s upcoming debut album Family Dollar (out on July 24). Apparently Kempf used to be more of a folky kinda musician, but after a decade of hardships he went more experimental. The record touches of the overlooked emotional experience that surrounds poverty. You could say it’s kind of a dark record, but I liken it to how sometimes light finds a way to pierce through a really dark room. Yeah, I guess it’s like that.

  4. Tourist x The Range - “Last”

This is a cool little collaboration that’s a reflection on grief. Apparently as they were writing this they each heard the lyric differently. Tourist could hear, “you know you’re lost”, while The Range was hearing, “you know you’re last”. As Tourist notes, “The duality of that truth resonated with me, as both meanings are applicable when someone leaves us. It has struck a more personal chord recently, as recently one of my dearest friends passed away very suddenly.”

  5. Georgia - “Started Out”

Last year I dropped another track from Georgia in this very playlist series and at some point I somehow reminded myself to check back to see if there was an album , finally got around to listening to Seeking Thrills, and y’all…. what a fucking cool record. I feel like this is a real launching point for her, so you should probably get in on this now.

  6. Teenage Bad Girl - “Keep Up With You”

I’m sorry to be doing this to you, but I am absolutely giving you a band that will probably never make another thing again. I just fucking love good French electro way too much to not pass this along. Teenage Bad Girl existed between 2007 and 2011. I’ve spent the most time with their last record, Back Wash. This track (much like the entire album) has split me between elated and enraged because it slaps so fucking hard but like…this is it. Anyway it’s fucking awesome and you deserve to have this in your arsenal, too.

  7. Cora Novoa - “over & done”

While trying to figure out every last detail about Teenage Bad Girl I crossed paths with their labelmate Cora Novoa (both are on Citizen Records). This Barcelona based bad bitch kinda does it all tbh. In addition to obviously being a music composer and a DJ, she also is the founder and creative director of her own label called SEEKING THE VELVET, which is for electronic and experimental pop music. She’s also an Abelton Official Trainer, music curator, etc. etc. She does a lot. She’s creative as fuuuuck. And she makes really fucking cool techno.

  8. Sam I - “wishin’ (feat. bipolar sunshine)”

Here is me nagging you again to go listen to Random Shit From The Internet Era. This record has something for everyone in it. I would not lie to you. Also like, going to take a moment to throw Sam I some more love because like, all the features on this record are great. Hadn’t heard bipolar sunshine before this. Really loving him.

  9. The Kickdrums - “Sunshine Guy”

I’m always a happy kid when Fitts surprises us with new music. Also dude dropping a track with a lyric “all these nights are blurring together” in the middle of quarantine is so goddamn spot on.

  10. Marlana - “The Right”

So I’m just getting caught up to Marlana but don’t stress that means there’s more than enough time for you, too! She’s got an EP dropping on July 24th called At Least I Tried (which is quite excellent I must say). That said, I would be very fucking rude to you if I did not make sure you heard “The Right” before I get you squared away on everything else going on with this EP.

  11. Nick Leng - “LEMONS”

Thanks to The Algorithm™ last week I came to know Nick Leng, who put out a record called LEMONS a couple of months ago. Things I have learned since thoroughly enjoying the South African born now LA-based singer-songwriter: the album is the result of an emotional breakup, the loss of a friend, and his house burning down - basically all at the same time. 😑 LEMONS. You get it now? Not for nothing though, the record put such a pep in my step that it made me teach myself how to make some bomb ass lemonade within a few hours of digesting the record. There’s a metaphor there, somewhere. I’ll let you find out for yourself what I’m saying.

  12. Golden Vessel - “Hesitate (feat. Emerson Leif)”

I am going to do my very best to not turn this web log into a Golden Vessel fan site, but goddamn it was a really fucking good day when I put on last year’s SLOWSHINE last week. Funny enough, this is not on that record. I just like taking advantage of a 2 for 1 special in showing you new stuff. That said, Emerson Leif’s vocal + the magical vibeyness that is Golden Vessel’s production = yes please.

  13. otta - “Near Enough A Woman”

otta has an EP dropping on Friday! (7/10). This track is not on it! Why did I do that? I don’t know. I guess I wanted to start with the basics with her so you could build to bumping Songbook? And this is like, definitely the basics compared to what you’ll hear on Songbook, which swings in a much more experimental direction. She’s expanding her musical palette and honestly with a voice like hers, she can get away with it.

  14. Diplo - “do si do (feat. Blanco Brown)”

Man I don’t know. Sometimes you just gotta go with the hype. This song is really fun even though my thoughts on Diplo are a mixed bag. I’m trying to occasionally participate in mainstream-ish moments. This was what my ears agreed to this week? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  15. Tall Tall Trees - “Deep Feels”

I listened to A Wave Of Golden Things when it came out but hadn’t put it on in a minute. Lotta records are hitting different in quarantine and this one is no exception. I guess the minimal distractions made me notice the little details of this record that I likely missed on the pre-pandemic passthroughs on this album. There’s too many to share in this baby blurb, just trust me. Anyway “Deep Feels” specifically is just a quintessential summer feel good jam IMO.

  16. Stilljill - “Some People”

LA indie psych-pop trio Stilljill recently dropped their debut EP, Waterslides, which celebrates the fluidity of femininity. As they told Ladygunn last week, “Womxn have historically been analogous to water – Sirens, Venus being born from seafoam, water and women as the birth and source of life. Womxn are often conditioned to be fluid or amenable when others won’t in ways that do not always serve us; i.e. compromising needs and desires, shifting ourselves or voices to suit spaces and male egos. Fluidity also means resilience, strength, and adaptability and we find power in that.” Take a second glance at the single artwork for their tracks, specifically the “river”. They are really thoughtful in every last detail of what they’re doing and I really appreciate that.

PS now would be a good time to remind you that you can sign up to get pinged every time I update this playlist, which means a post like this with my liner notes will be sitting in your inbox the literal second I smash that PUBLISH button and drag over the new tracks into the playlist. I am just saying. 😊

diSKOAver weekly: Week of June 24, 2020

Hello precious internet cuties! Hope y’all are staying safe. Here’s this week’s update. God there’s some cool shit in this one. I feel like I say that every week but this is also why I also laugh in people’s faces who are like, “Man remember when music was good? There's just nothing cool anymore.” If you hear anyone say that. You tell them to come find me. I’m happy to show them around.

  1. DE’WAYNE - “National Anthem”

If you can’t feel the energy from this track in your veins the second the sounds hit your eardrums I’m not sure what to tell you.

  2. binki - “Heybb!”

Everything binki has released so far is fucking great. My personal favorite is “Wiggle” but this one just fit the vibe I was going for this week.

  3. TOKiMONSTA - “Get Me Some (feat. Drew Love & Dumbfounded)

My favorite cut from TOKiMONSTA’s latest, Oasis Nocturne. It’s just too hot for it’s own good.

  4. Hermitude - “Let It Burn (World’s Gone Mad feat. Haiku Hands)”

Why yes the world has gone mad. (Mental note for me: spend more time with Pollyanarchy. You enjoyed that first spin)

  5. The Knocks - “No Requests (The Knocks VIP Mix)”

I miss DJ booths and people with strong opinions about what the DJ should be playing 😞

  6. TOBACCO - “Hungry Eyes”

We love a fun cover. Also there’s a pre-order for this on beige vinyl if that’s your kinda thing (for the record it’s def my kinda thing).

  7. Blockhead - “The Music Scene”

You know when you fall in love with a song all over again? 10 years later this still hits.

  8. Killer Bee - “Feel 4 U”

We love a local making moves. My brain wanders to far off places with this one. Just me?

  9. Latir - “Wallflower”

Came in loving “Blue Roses”, fell for his new EP Until Forever. This one’s my favorite though.

  10. Medasin - “Get By (feat. Cautious Clay)”

Part of my weekend homework is to spend more time with both Medasin and Cautious Clay. They always seem to be on my radar but somehow don’t make it into my ear holes enough.

  11. OKENYO - “Buckle Up”

OKENYO, on the other hand. God I’ve been having so much fun getting to know her catalog. This one though. Gotta love, “by the way by the way by the way you’re cute as fuck”.

  12. Brendan Maclean - “Easy Love”

All Aussies are perfect. The end. Also while checking in on what else Brendan had going on I noticed he got added to an official Spotify playlist called Search Engine Sex (but is clearly one of those algorithmic editorial playlists because it doesn’t come up for me🙄).

  13. Slow Magic - “Home”

First taste from the upcoming album, it’s the end of the world but it’s ok. Just a little something to curl up with if you’re feeling a little down.

  14. iZNiiK - “paradise”

You gotta check out the EP series from a few years ago that iZNiiK did. There’s some really cool stuff in those.

  15. Berry Juice - “She Got The Moon (feat. Deidre)”

Forever a sucker for nu disco. Seems promising enough. Going to keep my eye on this one.

  16. Sushi + Kash - “Shatter”

Feels kinda Daft Punk lite (and I mean this in the nicest way possible). Looks like dude is starting to really get his footing on his sound. We’ll see how this plays out.

  17. Jarami - “Bahía”

Yes this is from 2018 but don’t worry they have new stuff too. PS guess who also did a track with Cautious Clay? This world gets smaller and smaller every fuckin day man.

  18. Herzeloyde - “Disperse”

Herzeloyde is vibey af. You should check out his newest track too when you like this one.

  19. Vandelux - “Live Forever”

From his Lost In Common EP. The build on this one eases you into the idea of immortality being possible so by the

  20. Crowd Control - “My Special Girl (feat. Slug Father & Vantage)”

Happy house is my favorite house. You will enjoy Housy Love Songs Vol. 2, trust me.

  21. Hervé - “Blow Your Mind”

Bless this man for keeping us dancing in quarantine. Oh how I love him so.

  22. Mtbrd - “Damn Fine Coffee”

This cut from Damn Fine contains my advice to you if you’re choosing to continue to quarantine like me. It’s literally the only way I’ve been able to not lose my fucking mind.

  23. Calica - “Bitch”

You have to check out her TikTok and see her remake loads of cool tracks. Fell for her when she covered BENEE’s “Supalonely”. Also how fun is it to sing, “Cause you’re a bitch and you know it”?

  24. Body Language - “Let’s Try”

These Brooklyn babies are back from their break for some more retro dance vibes. Hope this means there’s more in the pipeline.

  25. FVLCRVM - “Bad Blood”

Other half of this double A-side single officially drops on July 14th, but you can sneak over to Soundcloud and hear “Hate List” now if you want.

  26. La Femme - “Mycose”

I always say there’s a song for everything and in the case of La Femme’s “Mycose” this is a track about….a yeast infection. Took me too long to put this all together. I need to stop blowing off Duolingo if I’m gonna keep falling in love with French artists.

  27. Tim Ayre - “Laxx”

This lil Sydney sweetie tho. Everything of his I’ve put on is just so dreamy. 😍

  28. daste. - “Telephone (What’s Your Name?)”

From their latest EP Same As it Ever Was. Whole EP is so damn SMOOOOOOVE. You will like.

  29. Geowulf - “Lonely”

A cut from last year’s LP My Resignation. I don’t know about you, but quarantine has made me really examine and reprioritize all of my relationships. Here for it.

  30. The Districts - “Cheap Regrets”

I need to play You Know I’m Not Going Anywhere more often. This is by far my favorite off the record.

  31. Deeper - “This Heat”

From their latest, Auto-Pain, that dropped in March. I love that all my brain can think to say about them is they sound very Alphaville/Union Pool. Ugh I miss shows so fuckin much. 😑

  32. Oxymorrons - “Justice”

Did you know: all the proceeds from this track are being donated to community non-profits and projects. Yep! That means all your future obsessive streaming on this one will be for a good cause! Feels good, huh? This is the band’s first drop on 333 Wreckords Crew.

[LISTEN] Various Artists - 'Music For Containment' (Full Album Stream)

I don’t know about y’all but I’ve noticed that the longer I’ve been in quarantine the better my deep listening skills have gotten. Recently when I’ve been playing records I assumed I had memorized forwards and backwards I’ve been picking up little details that I’ve never noticed before. To a certain extent, even in spite of everything anxiety inducing that is happening around me in the epicenter of the pandemic, the act of shifting my brain’s focus on soaking in every last detail of a song has really brought me some peace.

If I’m being honest I think miraculously stumbling into Music For Containment a few weeks back when I was really anxious was partially responsible for this. This is an effort organized by French artist, Molécule, with all proceeds going to the Fondation de France, who are using donations towards caregivers whether or not they’re in hospitals, as well as to finance research projects and anything else they can contribute towards those most vulnerable. The compilation contains 33 different French artists and it’s almost three and a half hours long, so there’s more than enough here to soothe your senses. The artists range in varying levels of popularity, too. A lot of them I had never heard of until then, but I was definitely delighted to see Étienne de Crécy and Rone amongst those who contributed (who are coincidentally also on this week’s diSKOAver weekly update).

If you’ve been having trouble staying calm during the day, or falling asleep at night, this is at least worth putting on once. If it works out for you, think how interesting you’ll sound at future gatherings telling folks you got through a pandemic by listening to French ambient music. 💖

#diSKOAverweekly: Week of April 23, 2020

this update is just like me: thiccc as fuuuuuuckkk

YAH BISH IS HEALTHY AND SAFE. Lorde help me if I had caught the COVID after that writeup about trying to go to shows when this wasn’t ABSOLUTELY WHACKY. Felt pretty crazy at the time publishing that, but I can’t help but wonder if folks had taken shit that seriously back then if we’d all be cutting our hair out of boredom in quarantine.

ANYWAY.

Your favorite deep cuts diva has finally climbed out of the pits of despair and double the fuck down on trying to give you things to cherish during all of whatever this is *gestures wildly*. That’s right, cute internet people! For as long as I can muster it, instead of 16 songs a week, you gonna get 32! Fuckin two more than you get randomly assigned from the goddamn Algorithm AND as always pleasantly arranged with one of these here liner note posts. I can’t wait for y’all to check this one out for sure because GOOD LORDE some of the stuff that found my ears will knock the wind right the fuck outta you it’s so damn good.

Here are the 32 ways I love you best this week:

  1. Étienne de Crécy - “DAYDREAM”

I literally rearranged this entire playlist to kick off this update with this song because we could all use some reassuring right now. Weird to think if I hadn’t gone to Paris in January and record shopped my ass off that this wouldn’t be in my life right now. One of my plans for this coming week is memorizing this man’s entire catalog so get ready for me to be even more annoying about him.

  2. LEFTI - “4ever (feat. Hoodboi)”

The next time I see my self proclaimed best friend imma hug him 4EVER for both this song and his recently launched cooking show on his Instagram called CHEFTI. I am gonna get up the nerve to try one of his recipes by the next time I have to go get groceries (and at the rate we’re going with this fucking pandemic it sounds like I will probably have time to go through all of them. 🙃PLEASE STAY THE FUCK HOME )

  3. Tom Aspaul - “WM”

This is my new favorite song to lip sync into Instagram when I’m intoxicated using weird filters (including Tom’s) and then not send it to anyone because I haven’t quite perfected it yet. More practice on that after this update! 🤪😂

  4. REYNA - “Coachella”

You know those songs that when you hear them you assume that the band has to be huge and you just missed the boat on them? This is one of those songs. This is such sugary poptastic perfection. Also I always love to hate on Coachella but my heart goes out to everyone enduring the effects of all these massive cancellations.

  5. LoveLeo - “BOYFREN”

There’s still a lot to learn about the eldest spawn of John C Reilly, who goes by LoveLeo. Apparently this catchy ass TikTok hit was recorded in his bedroom (which like, props bro). I love how delightfully weird he is. I feel like He would be the most fun to have in a group chat.

  6. Harry Nathan - “Frontin’ Me”

Is Dream House a genre yet? That’s how I would describe this. Anyway I would live a Harry Nathan dream house if I could feel as chill as I do when I listen to this.

  7. MILCK - “Slow Fade”

Um, so like, everything about MILCK is wonderful. Her heart is as beautiful as her voice. She deserves a hell of a lot more attention than she’s getting right now, so…..FIX IT. And check out her latest EP ‘Into Gold’.

  8. BAYNK - “KISS ME (feat. Mood Talk)”

I’m so hype that BAYNK is dropping another EP. I practically lived inside of ‘Someone’s EP II’. The next one, "‘A Study In Movement’ should be dropping sometime next month. In the meantime, he’ll be DJing this weekend via livestream so def check that out. And yes I have my homework assignment to investigate Mood Talk further don’t you worry.

  9. Sly Fieri - “Akimi”

We love a punny band name. I am going to be checking out his new mix called ‘Scars’ after I finish this so hopefully you do the same once I sell you on him with this.

  10. JVLY - “monsoon”

lmao I am way too good at Aussie finding baby bands. Also sorry for sending through sexy vibes if you’re quarantining alone.

  11. Hamzaa - “Write It Down”

This song knocks the wind out of me every fucking time I play it. I have to fight back tears. It’s such a beautiful tribute to songwriting and how it’s a combination of art and therapy.

  12. Rone - “Ginko Biloba”

You have to watch the music video for this song because it’s SO WILD. It had to be the most fun thing to shoot of all time. Also Rone’s fifth studio album ‘Room With A View’ comes out this week so GET HYPE.

  13. Teischa - “not ok”

When she sings, “lately I’ve just been wasting my days. I’m not broken but I’m not ok” good LORDE does that feel like a collective mood right now. When you love this you can go thank Slum fam for talking her up in their insta stories. Also please go listen to her new record, ‘momentary’, that dropped earlier this month, it is quite excellent.

  14. Baby Rose - “Mortal”

Girl sings the ever loving shit out of this song. WHEW. Her debut album ‘To Myself’ is out now. Love her. Now. Do it.

  15. Rufus Wainwright - “Damsel In Distress”

Some days Rufus is literally the only thing keeping me together during this fucking pandemic. If you don’t follow him on Instagram for his daily Quarantunes updates you are doing this whole thing wrong. While I’m upset that he pushed back releasing ‘Unfollow The Rules’ to July 10, the way he spoke about how important the physical aspect o the release was super important to him will make this worth the wait.

  16. Monad - “Dissolution”

I lost track of Monad but they are back on my radar and have dropped a delightful EP. This is the title track.

  17. Johnny Hunter - “Try As You May”

I’m pretty sure I can confidently say that no one in North America loves Johnny Hunter as much as I do. God damn, there is something so timeless about this band. These dudes need to crank out more jams IMMEDIATELY. I doubt I’d wear these out any time soon, but goddamn I just want to cocoon myself in blanket of their songs.

  18. Car Seat Headrest - “Hollywood”

Okay. I clearly need to get caught up on all things Car Seat Headrest because OH MY GOD THIS SINGLE BROKE MY BRAIN. This is throwing me hellllllaaaaa Beck vibes, circa…Odelay maybe? I definitely always think of “MTV Makes Me Wanna Smoke Crack” when the chorus kicks in on this one. Wow. Yeah. I got a lot to catch up on here. This one’s a big hell yes from me tho.

  19. Tesla Boy - “Абьюзер”

First, I’m gonna need you to take a moment to appreciate how much effort it took to find the tracklisting of this album in copy/pasteable form so I could accurately display the track title. At any rate, this cut from his latest album ‘Андропов’ (yes that was another copy +paste) is an earworm and a half, even if I have no idea what the fuck he’s saying. Fuck it, I’ve got time. Maybe I’ll learn some fuckin Russian so I can love this man harder.

  20. Blondage - “I Love Music”

In addition to this song being relatable as fuck, I would like to gift you the ability to hear “cause people suck and so do youuuuuu” ring through your head the next time you see someone rolling by without a mask on when you’re out (it has been a lovely coping mechanism for me, lmao).

  21. Mason x DJ Glen - “Attention”

I’ve caught a few of Mason’s DJ sets he’s been livestreaming on Facebook to pass the time. He’s got good energy in spite of this, in case you’re in need of extra doses of that right now.

  22. Wassu - “Overcome”

We got a new house hunny to loveeeeee. Y’all better give some love to this local or I will cut u. 🔪

  23. Ryan Hemsworth - “New Life" (feat. Love Mansuy)”

In addition to dropping this double A-side single, Ryan Hemsworth has an ongoing thread on Twitter dot com right now where he drops new music recommendations. If you weren’t temporarily satisfied from this update (rude) there’s a lot of cool stuff in there. Also he’s doing a set tonight at 9:20 EST for 420 on what is arguably the craziest livestreaming experience I have ever been part of (I peeped it earlier as the whole shebang was getting started). Also the timing of this song considering we’ve all got so much time to reflect what our new lives are gonna be like when we’re able to roam freely and safely again.

  24. Classixx - “One More Song (feat. Roosevelt)”

I have missed both Classixx and Roosevelt so this was a well timed update from them. I know when Classixx dropped “Love Me No More” there were hints of more to come in 2020. This better not be the only update, swear to god.

  25. Pat Lok - “Salvation”

Twitter fam’s new track is a total Vibey McViberson!!! Get itttt. Also this literal angel has been randomly started doing song breakdowns on Twitch and then uploading them to his [very robust] YouTube channel. His latest one was for Justice’s legendary track, “D.A.N.C.E.” and apparently lotsa other cool kids show up to talk about the songmaking process while he’s doing this. I will absolutely be watching this later so I can bask in all of the hard work that I take for granted.

  26. Sunda Arc - “Daemon”

I gave myself a headache trying to remember where the fuck I found these guys but it doesn’t matter just enjoy some dope ass beats from Norwich and stop being so ungrateful 😂Also they dropped a record in February called ‘Tides’ and you gonna like the way it sounds I guarantee it.

  27. RAAVE TAPES - “Red Flag”

This is probably weird to say, but I feel like these guys give off the same intensity level as HEALTH but are like….less loud and hella dancier about it? Does that even make sense? Listen it’s 420 and I am abstaining from celebrating until after I hit publish on this. Just go with it and enjoy the fuckin track. You’ll thank me later.

  28. Kari Faux - “While God Was Sleepin’….”

Husky hunny Danio produced this track which is how I came across this. I now worship at the temple of Kari Faux. Please join me in prayer.

  29. seeyousoon - “Steamy”

Wooo we love fresh hometown heroes! Orlando doesn’t have to be exclusively embarrassing! 🙏🏻They’ve only got two tracks out, which means you can claim “I knew them way back when” rights if you get on board now.

  30. CMillano - “Winter”

Whatever Bador fucks with, I fuck with…..and therefore you should probably fuck with.

  31. Lucas Estrada - “Mind On Overdrive (feat. Wave Wave and Kyan Palmer)”

This song sounds like the soundtrack to a party I desperately want to be at instead of sitting in my bed all day for an indefinite period of time. Kyan Palmer and that excellent album of his from last year, ‘it’s called branding sweetie’, is how I tumbled into this track. Will get to know Lucas Estrada and Wave Wave more intimately now. This why I follow as many bands on Spotify as I can. Everyone’s always collaborating and really cool stuff spills out unexpectedly everywhere you look.

  32. L Devine - “Boring People”
It’s funny how well this song translates to current day boredom even though it’s pre-pandem. I wonder how this song is sitting with her now that we’re all stuck like this? Might try and slide into her DMs. I mean, I got time…..

#diSKOAverweekly: week of February 26, 2020

Here is your Wednesday update on a Friday. My bad. But I love you, so. There’s that.

  1. Bamily - “Katata”

This song feels like bottled sunshine. You’re welcome.

  2. The Undercover Dream Lovers - “Chardonnay”

This whole album is so chill. Oh yeah, that came out today. Go listen to It’s All In Your Head.

  3. Disq - “Daily Routine”

Looking forward to their debut album Collector, which drops….next week(!!!)

  4. Little Hurt - “It’s Okay Not To Be Okay”

Just in case you need the reminder. 💖

  5. Example - “Back On The Wreck”

Not for nothing dude is crushing it on the self-releasing game. Also like that the pop sheen has kinda worn off and he’s back to making cooler jams like this.

  6. Firstworld - “Groove Is In The Heart (feat. Delia Dane)”

This is one of the best covers I’ve heard in a long time. I was really skeptical with this at first but they really nailed it.

  7. Spencer Ludwig - “Just Wanna Dance”

Just making sure you listen to Spencer while I wrap up this interview so you can love him like I love him.

  8. Niki Black - “The Other Man”

Very happy to see Niki is back with more music. She dropped a really cool video for this too that you should check out.

  9. Madame Gandhi - “Bad Habits”

Had this song on a lot lately to remind myself to be better so passing this along to y’all in case you missed it. Gonna see this bad bitch on March 10th at Elsewhere. Think we’re doing an interview, too!

  10. Joe Publik - “Military Minded (feat. Scorzayzee)”

Missed that his new record Stubborn Vectis dropped last week. Dropped this in as a mental note to check it out.

  11. RJD2 - “Pull Up On Love (feat. STS, Khari Mateen)”

First single from RJD2’s upcoming album The Fun Ones out on April 17th! I’m so happy he’s back I’m not sure if my feet are touching the ground when I walk around listening to this.

  12. Juice - “DiCaprio (Love Me All The Time)”

Juice just shared the music video for this track and announced a headlining tour! Also the clip at the end lololol

  13. LOVER - “Waiting Up (feat. Cult Shøtta")”

Still loving on LOVER. Liked the video a lot for this too.

  14. Ry X - “Oceans (feat. ólafur Arnalds)”

I don’t know how else to explain it but this song feels like you’re coming up for air.

  15. Black Books - “In The In”

Oh shit their EP Cheer Up dropped today! It’s great. Definitely worth a spin.

  16. Grivo - “H.D.C.”

Sad to have missed these guys open for Slow Crush at Saint Vitus earlier in the month. They remind me a lot of old school Starflyer 59, which is why my obsession is slowly intensifying.

[NIGHT OUT] Spencer Ludwig @ Mercury Lounge 2/13/2020

images courtesy of Some Kind of Awesome

Last week I finally had the pleasure of catching rising singer-songwriter and trumpeter extraordinaire, Spencer Ludwig. I’m thrilled that the Brooklyn can claim the Los Angeles born poptastic performer as our very own. It was a special treat for longtime fans because it was the first time that Spencer shared some new material that he’s been working on. Prior to the sold out show, I was fortunate enough to grab Spencer for a quick interview (which is coming in the next few days) and not to throw you too many spoilers from that, but he wasn’t exaggerating about how his newer material explores a much broader range of emotions than any of the work he’s released to date.

Another semi-spoiler from the interview: there was a moment during the interview where Spencer casually semi-downplayed his abilities as a singer, citing something to the effect of he didn’t have have a lot of vocal training yadda yadda yadda. I remember chuckling to myself a few songs into his set at that very thought. Granted, if he thinks there’s room for improvement in his vocal performance, I will always encourage someone to better themselves, obviously. All of that to say for only a few years into his solo career he’s already leaps and bounds ahead of a lot of performers that I’ve seen grace the same stage. He certainly had that audience in the palm of his hand from the moment he stepped on stage.

I should also relay that during his set, the Latin Grammy award winner announced that he will be making a return to The Freehold for another residence this coming March. Details should be rolling out momentarily on that. With regards to the aforementioned new music, there are no official details on any of that just yet. That all said, while this is the first we’ve seen of Spencer in 2020, it’s obviously not going to be the last. How often he’ll grace us with his presence is still up in the air, but rest assured I’ll be passing along every last update.

#diSKOAverweekly: Week of February 5, 2020

yes bish 2020 we fancy up in hur!

YES I AM ALIVE!

Yes, it’s been awhile. I’m getting better at figuring out how to keep all these plates spinning, swear to fucking god.

Been sitting on these jams way too long to not share! Next update will actually happen on a Wednesday so please be kind and grab what you like before they vanish!

  1. The Brilliance - “How Do We Know”

Local lads The Brilliance just dropped their latest album ‘Suite No. 2: World Keeps Spinning’, companion album to 2018’s ‘Suite No. 1 Oh Dreamer’. Both are worth a spin!

  2. Rafael Casal - “Oxygen”

Missed this track when it dropped. This guy can really do anything. Jelly.

  3. Connor Duermit - “Everything”

This boy’s voice is smooooooooooooove. God damn. What are they putting in the water in LA right now?!

  4. Hydromag - “P.J.R.”

When that cozy bedroom pop just hits right… *chefs kiss*.

  5. Imbibe - “Reflections”

Fun fact: these guys are brothers! Australian ones no less (lol of course they are). If you’re in Europe and have seen Parcels somewhat recently chances are you caught these guys opening for them.

  6. Amtrac - “Radical (feat. Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs)”

Amtrac is gaining momentum, best hop on! Also very happy to see TEED popping his head up again for some air. When’s that homey gonna give us more than a few random tunes and remixes?!

  7. Yuksek - “G.F.Y. (feat. Queen Rose)”

ICYMI Yuksek is always perfect and here is more proof. Can’t wait to see him with JD Samson at The Dance on April 2nd! Gonna be 🔥🔥🔥!!!!

  8. Crush Club - “My Man (feat. Nicki B The Vagabond)”

As president of the Crush Club - Crush Club, I feel it is my responsibility to make sure that everyone knows about their latest. If My Man had a fragrance, what would it smell like? 🤔🤔

  9. LA Priest - “What Moves”

LA Priest is back and dropping an album GENE on April 24th!! I’m so fucking hype! I have missed him so so sooooo.

  10. Tamara Kumbula - “1 to 8”

It’s wild the things I find while roaming around on Stationhead. Have you downloaded that app yet? I’m going to start doing more shit on there. Anyway, I’m really digging on Tamara’s whole vibe.

  11. Cannibal Kids - “I Keep My Eyes Closed”

Nice to see some fresh meat coming out of my home state (Florida). Gonna keep an eye on these guys.

  12. of Montreal - “You’ve Had Me Everywhere”

If you haven’t heard ‘Ur Fun’ yet you absolutely must. It’s quickly climbing the ranks into my top 5 of Montreal records.

  13. The 1975 - “Me & You Together Song”

Y’all know I’m a sucker for a good love song and this one is def hitting me in all of those warm and fuzzy feels. Also the new music video that dropped today is a nice little Throwback Thursday moment.

  14. Gourmet - “Stone Cold Steve Austin”

  15. WAAX - “Labrador”

Sometimes I get bored and look up the bands on a festival lineup that I’ve never heard of. I did this for a fest that I Know Leopard was playing and somehow landed on this delightful bunch of noisy friends. Stay curious! There’s great songs everywhere! You just gotta look!

  16. Grieves - “Let The Devil In”

Been a minute since I caught up with Grieves. Really enjoying his latest, ‘The Collections of Mr. Nice Guy’. This song was how I found my way back to him.
