[SONG OF THE DAY] Methyl Ethel - "Majestic AF"
Just a week after their third studio full-length Triage officially turned a year old West Australia’s Methyl Ethel have returned with a brand new single along with news of a brand new EP and a slew of tour dates. The new track, “Majestic AF”, is a captivating opening for the forthcoming EP, Hurts To Laugh, which is due out on April 10th. Full of a variety of burbling synth melodies, kick-free drum beats, and brainchild Jake Webb’s signature falsetto, it comes of somewhat minimalist at first and then builds incrementally, incorporating layer upon layer of texture until it swiftly comes to a close.
Hurts To Laugh was recorded at the same time as Triage, so it’s fitting that both album covers feature art by Sydney-based artist Loribelle Spriovski. Despite being recorded simultaneously, Triage was the final of the trilogy of albums, following 2016’s Oh Human Spectacle and 2017’s Everything Is Forgotten.
On the heels of the release update, the band unveiled a slew of solo tour dates in Australia and support dates in the US for Peter, Bjorn, and John in March and April.

[SONG OF THE DAY] Paper Idol - "I'm Fantastic"

FRIDAY
How y’all cute people feeling? Me?
I’M FANTASTIC.
The source of my perfectly pleasant mood is the latest from Paper Idol’s latest track from his forthcoming debut EP, Money For Flowers. If the name sounds familiar, it’s because yer girl included one of his earlier tracks, “Still So Alive”, in a diSKOAver weekly update back in August. Since then the Los Angeles based electro-pop newcomer has been keeping us satiated with a string of tracks and remixes while he worked on the aforementioned EP, which will be dropping this spring.
If you’re the kind of person that feels like you’ve repeated a phrase similar to, “Nothing’s wrong with me, this is just my face” more than a couple of times, then “I’m Fantastic” is the song for you. Our society loves to imply that if you’re not blatantly happy all of the time that there’s probably something wrong with you. It’s weird that we’ve found a way to weaponize wellness to an extent. Humans are blessed with a wide range of emotions that we all experience at different times all day every day. Sometimes you’re elated, sometimes you’re depressed, and sometimes you’re just….chillin?
I love the way the chorus comes barreling through your eardrums, abruptly interrupting the pleasant piano hooks and carefree vibes, questioning Paper Idol brainchild Matan KG’s happiness as if he needs to justify his every move throughout the song. I especially enjoyed the choice to let the question nag him a bit before finally responding so he can go back to his bopmaking business. It makes it feel like you’re eavesdropping on the most unnecessary conversation ever, only you want to dance your ass off to it?
Speaking on the track, Matan shares, “I grew up in Wisconsin, and in the precious few hot summer months it was a family sin to stay indoors on the weekends. In third grade, I wanted to do nothing more than play Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 on my gamecube. Like many other kids in the 00s, I hated the 'get some fresh air!' plea from my parents, so I wrote this protest song in honor of my younger self.”
Last week, Paper Idol announced their upcoming Fantastic Tour which features select dates on the west coast. Tour kicks off on February 29th (what up leap year) in San Francisco and ends in Reno. Dates and more info below! Go! Go! Go!

yes bish 2020 we fancy up in hur!
YES I AM ALIVE!
Yes, it’s been awhile. I’m getting better at figuring out how to keep all these plates spinning, swear to fucking god.
Been sitting on these jams way too long to not share! Next update will actually happen on a Wednesday so please be kind and grab what you like before they vanish!
The Brilliance - “How Do We Know”
Local lads The Brilliance just dropped their latest album ‘Suite No. 2: World Keeps Spinning’, companion album to 2018’s ‘Suite No. 1 Oh Dreamer’. Both are worth a spin!
Rafael Casal - “Oxygen”
Missed this track when it dropped. This guy can really do anything. Jelly.
Connor Duermit - “Everything”
This boy’s voice is smooooooooooooove. God damn. What are they putting in the water in LA right now?!
Hydromag - “P.J.R.”
When that cozy bedroom pop just hits right… *chefs kiss*.
Imbibe - “Reflections”
Fun fact: these guys are brothers! Australian ones no less (lol of course they are). If you’re in Europe and have seen Parcels somewhat recently chances are you caught these guys opening for them.
Amtrac - “Radical (feat. Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs)”
Amtrac is gaining momentum, best hop on! Also very happy to see TEED popping his head up again for some air. When’s that homey gonna give us more than a few random tunes and remixes?!
Yuksek - “G.F.Y. (feat. Queen Rose)”
ICYMI Yuksek is always perfect and here is more proof. Can’t wait to see him with JD Samson at The Dance on April 2nd! Gonna be 🔥🔥🔥!!!!
Crush Club - “My Man (feat. Nicki B The Vagabond)”
As president of the Crush Club - Crush Club, I feel it is my responsibility to make sure that everyone knows about their latest. If My Man had a fragrance, what would it smell like? 🤔🤔
LA Priest - “What Moves”
LA Priest is back and dropping an album GENE on April 24th!! I’m so fucking hype! I have missed him so so sooooo.
Tamara Kumbula - “1 to 8”
It’s wild the things I find while roaming around on Stationhead. Have you downloaded that app yet? I’m going to start doing more shit on there. Anyway, I’m really digging on Tamara’s whole vibe.
Cannibal Kids - “I Keep My Eyes Closed”
Nice to see some fresh meat coming out of my home state (Florida). Gonna keep an eye on these guys.
of Montreal - “You’ve Had Me Everywhere”
If you haven’t heard ‘Ur Fun’ yet you absolutely must. It’s quickly climbing the ranks into my top 5 of Montreal records.
The 1975 - “Me & You Together Song”
Y’all know I’m a sucker for a good love song and this one is def hitting me in all of those warm and fuzzy feels. Also the new music video that dropped today is a nice little Throwback Thursday moment.
Gourmet - “Stone Cold Steve Austin”
WAAX - “Labrador”
Sometimes I get bored and look up the bands on a festival lineup that I’ve never heard of. I did this for a fest that I Know Leopard was playing and somehow landed on this delightful bunch of noisy friends. Stay curious! There’s great songs everywhere! You just gotta look!
Grieves - “Let The Devil In”
Been a minute since I caught up with Grieves. Really enjoying his latest, ‘The Collections of Mr. Nice Guy’. This song was how I found my way back to him.
[SONG OF THE DAY] Miro Shot - "Half of Us"
I can’t think of a more perfect excuse to make my triumphant return from my longer-than-anticipated hiatus than to happily update you that my favorite global digital utopian artist collective Miro Shot has unveiled the opening track, “Half Of Us”, from their forthcoming debut full-length album, CONTENT.
As the homey Roman Rappak, de facto frontman of the band told Fame Magazine,”Half of Us” is about a girl gamer the band is friends with who has a huge following on Twitch but had to give up streaming her games because of the rampant amount of sexist and abusive comments she received.
“The song is about the layers of reality technology creates- often leading to people acting in a really unpleasant way- but its also about the way it can bring people together,” he explains, “So much is said about how we are ‘all on our screens’ and how instagram/Twitch influencers are shallow – but there is a really beautiful side to these new ways of communicating that often gets overlooked. The back and forth between the ultra happy female vocal in the song, and the intensity of Tomo’s beats and Jamies distorted bass feels like the audio equivalent of this.”
When last we met our heroes, the Servers EP had just begun to scratch the surface of the immersive world that is Miro Shot. As their widely lauded live show has continued to evolve, so has the band’s sound and subject matter, which mostly means they’ve honed in on their primary mission, which Rappak very succinctly describes CONTENT as an “album is about the end of the world, and the best way to avoid it.”
I hope y’all are ready for what’s next because SHIT IS ABOUT TO GET VERY REAL and in the BEST. POSSIBLE. WAY.
The future we’ve all been dreaming about our entire lives is happening right now as we speak, you guys, and the accompanying soundtrack for living our best possible future drops on May 1st.
#diSKOAverweekly: Week of September 25, 2019
Beck - “E-Pro (CapeLion V2 Remix)
I’m not sure why this remix was being hoarded for so long only to be leveraged in this Destiny 2 trailer, but goddamn if this isn’t the 2 minute burst of energy I needed in my LIFE!!! Also, checked out some of Cape Lion’s stuff. SUPER DOPE.
Ssion - “Heaven Is My Thing Again”
Ugh it’s so hard to keep tabs on all of the NY bbs but imma try harder to make sure that
O Mer - “Repack The Junk”
Brooklyn (by way of Tel Aviv) bb is getting ready to drop an EP titled the same as this track. Should be dropping fairly soon, given I’m just catching up on the handful of tracks he’s dropped this year.
Wrabel - “magic”
My beloved lil bae-bel dropped an EP one of those happy people and I can’t get over how wild of a ride it’s been with this sweetheart since his Sideways days.
All Tvvins - “Divine”
Fresh off tour these dudes hit the studio and started crankin out some hits and this is the first of many to come (per the band)
Wet - “Old Bone (Jim-E Stack Remix)”
Okay so like this is one of those instances where I am just like really taken by how transformative this remix is. Jim-E Stack brought a completely different energy with his take on Wet’s latest single, “Old Bone”. You ABSOLUTELY MUST LISTEN TO BOTH. I’M NOT FUCKING AROUND HERE ABOUT THIS.
Jamo - “Connection (feat. YOUNGSOUL)”
I know you are surprised that I stumbled into a new Australian artist that I am relatively smitten by. It’s cool, you’ll get used to it eventually. Actually I suppose this one’s a 2 for 1 special because although Jamo lures you in with the vibe, singer YOUNGSOUL gets all up in your ear and coats your eardrums with his silky smooth voice and THAT’S WHEN THE REAL SWOONING STARTS.
Dansu - “State of Mind”
I keep waiting for Dansu to take off big time. They’re so fucking perfectly electro-poptastic.
Squid - “The Cleaner”
Feeling v hashtag blessed to have finally checked out Squid this week. Their new EP Town Centre is quite delightful, but “The Cleaner” is by far my fave. It’s super fun, dare I say sassy post-punk. Will probably be grabbing this on vinyl when it’s available on November 15th.
PLANET - “Never New”
Sydney four-piece PLANET make shimmery indie-pop and I would very much like to get on a plane to Australia and just swoon and twirl at all of their shows…maybe forever?
Georgia - “Never Let You Go”
London electro-pop powerhouse Georgia shared the first taste of her forthcoming album Seeking Thrills, which is slated to drop in January 2020. I hope I don’t have to wait that long to hear more of this because this is ✨very much my shit✨.
Keelan Mak - “Sleep Talker”
I think Brisbane’s self proclaimed “22 year old bedroom producer dude” Keelan Mak is tryna seduce us into said bedroom with his latest single. It….might be working. His voice is very swoon-worthy.
Justin Jay - “i know ur out there”
LA house hunny Justin Jay dropped his latest record everything will come together, pt. 1 a few months back. This is the opening track of what ended up being quite a fun run for my earholes, so def don’t sleep on checking out the rest of the record when you find yourself loving this!
Sofi Tukker - “Swing (Crush Club Remix)”
So v v v v v v v v proud to be the president of the Crush Club 💖⚡️Crush Club. This remix is 🔥🔥🔥🔥.
Man Without Country - “Forever Endeavour”
The homey recently launched a Patreon and this was the first single since that all started up. Lucky fans got to hear it before it hit DSPs elsewhere. Very happy he’s sticking it out. I luhhh him.
b.i.g.s.h.r.i.m.p. - “Wyoming (feat. Bunny)”
Another tasty treat from Post Animal guitarist Jake Hirshland’s side project. I wonder how many of these he’s sitting on? I should probs DM him.
Okay fine I’ll post the embed for the archive here too so it’s all in once nice and neat place for you in case you missed last week’s tracks.
[SONG OF THE DAY] TWINKIDS - "Eighteen"
LA queer pop duo TWINKIDS have returned with a brand new song, “Eighteen”, taken from their forthcoming EP Lizard House, which is slated for a November 22nd release. The scintillating slice of 80s era synth pop follows last year’s pair of poptastic singles, “I’m Sorry” and “Jigoku Tengoku”. As we’ve come to know and love about the dancy duo, the delivery of the group’s candid lyrics by vocalist Gene Fukui offers such a remarkably unique layer of tenderness to their sound and “Eighteen” is no exception to this. A retrospective song about young romance, the mid-tempo production is full of shimmering synths, offering a perfect setup to balance the slight twinge we often feel while reflecting on the past. As Gene explains, “The song is about looking back at your past self and realizing how much you’ve changed and how much other people have changed. I guess that’s terrifying in a way, like nothing really stays the same. Even something you once felt like you were going to devote your entire life to feels really distant, but it still left a hole in your heart."
Upcoming TWINKIDS tour dates:
OCT 18 - Los Angeles, CA @ Gold Diggers
[SONG OF THE DAY] Mayer Hawthorne - "The Game"
Cali-based crooner cutie Mayer Hawthorne is really on a creative spree at the moment and I am ALL FOR IT.
He’s been making the rounds in recent months with new bops from Tuxedo, his project with producer extraordinaire Jake One, but Hawthorne has decided to release some solo music as well. I can’t believe it’s been a little over 3 years since he dropped Man About Town. Time certainly flies! At any rate, his first offering in too many moons, “The Game”, is a slow jam that feels a lot like a more mature version of his Strange Arrangement days. As he’s spent time exploring the depths of his solo sound, it’s simply showcased his vocal prowess all the more. He’s really one of those dudes who can literally sing the phonebook. I’d be like, “ok and how much did you say it was gonna be to have him sing 3 pages of people with K last names? $500? cool I’ll Venmo you now”.
The song is the first of what is supposedly more to come. It’s wild that we’ll likely be getting Tuxedo and solo Hawthorne stuff simultaneously. What a time to be alive! The next Tuxedo album, titled Tuxedo III, will be dropping on July 19th just in time for their upcoming 21-day North American tour. Dude certainly likes to keep himself busy!
[SONG OF THE DAY] !!! - "Serbia Drums"
oh HELLLLLL yes
it’s DEF a VIBE O CLOCK ON FRIDAYYYYYYY vibe with this one
New York’s finest dance-punk darlings !!! (chk chk chk for you n00bz) have returned as promised earlier in the month with more new music in the form of their new single, “Serbia Drums”, off of their forthcoming album Wallop, which out on August 30th.
Fun factoid for you: the beat of “Serbia Drums” was taken from an iPhone recording that drummer Chris Egan took while the band was touring in Serbia and then the band worked their magic on making it the combination of glimmer and grit that’s essentially my sweet spot for dance jams. Also very heady lyrics going here. Guess you could say they really pack a WALLOP.
…sorry I had to 😑😂
ANYWAY. It’s amazing that this band has been cracking out jams for coming on 20 years now. Since I was outside of NYC then I didn’t come onto the scene with them until 2003 with Me And Guiliani Down By The School Yard. That double single definitely had a big impact on me, thus me waving my invisible pom-poms for these fine folks ever since.
August 30 (or publicist with the advance) come soon! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
