[SONG OF THE DAY] Methyl Ethel - "Scream Whole"

It feels only fitting that I get to excited share during music + tech conference MondoNYC (which is supposed to replace the void in my chest that CMJ left) that Methyl Ethel is working on more new music! Singer Jake Webb is not one to stop writing and apparently the second that their last record, Everything Is Forgotten, was out across the interwebs that he took almost no time to start writing again. As he told ABC Australia, "It helps with the album anxiety, because it's like, 'that's not it'. I've got a few demos that I can be really excited about."

This latest song, “Scream Whole”, is another hypnotic number from the group, although this time they incorporate more synths than the usual guitar stylings. The song will be on their upcoming third album that will be out early next year. As of today Webb isn’t allowed to reveal a name of the album either, but you can rest assured knowing I will of course report back when I have an update on that.

[SONG OF THE DAY] Art Brut - "Hospital!"

omfg Art Brut is back 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

I really wish I had recorded my reaction when I saw the email that started with “ART BRUT ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM” because I’m pretty sure I looked like I was having a seizure, which is fitting because the newest single from the forthcoming album, Wham! Bang! Pow! Let’s Rock Out!, is called “Hospital!”. The song details singer Eddie Argos’ reaction to being in a German hospital for almost a full month after having a surgery that had a few complications.

"The only thing that kept me sane was the mantra that eventually became this song,” Argos said. “Every single lyric was written and repeated over and over again as I suffered numerous indignities. Songwriting is something I've always used to alleviate stress and on this occasion I really tested it to its limits. What I am most impressed by is that even when I'm at death’s door and pumped full of morphine, staggering around and collapsing all the time, I can still write a comical call-and-response backing vocal to amuse myself.”

As a longtime fan since the Bang Bang Rock & Roll days I am very glad to hear that said ordeal is three years behind Argos, although I’m not sure to what extent we should be concerned that he playfully added, “I've broken all the promises I make to myself in this song.”

It’s been 7 YEARS since the London rockers released their last studio full length, Brilliant! Tragic! so my near seizure-like reaction was the appropriate response. Fortunately we don’t have to wait too terribly long for Wham! Bang! Pow! Let’s Rock Out!. It drops on November 23rd.

In addition to the album announcement, you lucky folks across the pond get to see the band live as early as November 7th. No word on US/North American dates yet but I’m sure those are coming, too.

Oh oh and there’s a music video for the song starring “Eggy Argos” (lol) that’s super cute and worth a watch too!

[SONG OF THE DAY] The Living End - "Drop The Needle"

Happy October aka the best month for music (imo)!

I feel like I need to kick this month off with one of my all time favorites since high school who just dropped their eighth studio album on Friday.

Do you know The Living End? You should know The Living End. These awesome Aussies(!) were the first imports I ever bought back in….1997?? Either way I’ve loved them ever since. These guys have consistently delivered solid punk/psychobilly jams for over two decades now and their recent album, Wunderbar, is no exception.

As much as I enjoyed the singles leading up to the album dropping, be being the deep cuts diva that I am I have found myself living for “Drop The Needle”, an upbeat energy-filled track rooted in reflection. This song was built for impromptu road trips and celebrating how playing certain records will always connect you to memories, both good and bad. If you don’t feel a warm smile spread across your face by the end of the chorus the first time it kicks in then you might be dead inside, just saying.

No word on whether or not the trio will head to the states to support this record, but you can bet if that happens I won’t be able to shut up about it. I’m just realizing I haven’t seen these guys since 1999 when they played the same Warped Tour that Eminem was at. O_o

[SONG OF THE DAY] Breakbot (feat. Irfane) - "Devotion (Yuksek Remix)"

IT

IS

FRIDAY

and I need it to be happy hour after this fuckin week.

If you’re like me and you plan to dance your cares away this weekend, might I offer up this slice of pure heaven off of Breakbot’s brand new Another You EP, out today!

Breakbot is always good for sexy dance jams, but then he made the best decision ever and had My Most Favorite Frenchie, Yuksek, step up to remix, “Devotion” and dude fucking #nailedit. On its own, “Devotion” is straightforward electro boogie goodness, but Yuksek opted to transform it into a huge retro-ish disco number that is sure to fill out any dance floor.

If you happen to be in NYC, Breakbot will be doing a DJ set during this year’s Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival on October 4th, along with other dates in the US which you can find more info about over on Facebook.

[SONG OF THE DAY] Allie X - "Little Things"

We’re a little over a month out before pop powerhouse Allie X unveils her latest project, Super Sunset. In the meantime she slipped us another taste of what’s to come in the form of, “Little Things”, a song where X cries out for a different perspective other than the one that’s starting to drive her up the walls. While I’ve thoroughly enjoyed prior singles for this project, “Science”, “Not So Bad In LA”, and “Focus”, there are so many little things about this new single that I simply adore. Almost instantly you know the level of intimacy you’re about to get in the song as she opens with, “I put my head on my shoulders / Try to be someone yeah”. She proceeds to to open up about how obsessing over minuscule details prevents her from truly feeling comfortable with being herself and seeing the things around her for what they really are. It feels like with every album she peels off more layers to reveal her true self and honestly her vulnerability is greatly appreciated.

Super Sunset comes on the heels last year’s CollXtion II and will be available for your earholes on October 29th.

[SONG OF THE DAY] Crush Club - "Higher"

credit Brian Andrew Lozano

WE OUT HERE THROWING #POSIPARTY VIBES TODAY FAM

Today I am happy to support local and hope they go global because if we’re being honest this song is giving me life today.

Last week, New York’s Crush Club released a bottle full of glitter and lightning in the form of “Higher”, a song the disco-crazed duo felt compelled to write about empowering yourself to plow through the tough times to get to your higher self. As they told BlackBook during last week’s premiere, “Whenever faced with obstacles, loss or any negative distraction, it can be difficult to make it through to the other side of whatever’s in your way. This song is a reminder that everyone knows how it feels to be down, so impossibly low, but that there’s always a way out, up, higher. We hope it lifts you!”

If this doesn’t fix whatever funk you may be in, I don’t know what will tbh.

Oh PS these dudes are stepping out to do some shows with SOFI TUKKER so if you happen to see them on the bill you make sure to show up in time to catch them! Dates and more info over on their Facebook.

[SONG OF THE DAY] Whethan (feat. Honne) - "Radar"

As if Chicago’s Whethan couldn’t be any more of one of my new favorites, he goes and collabs with my HONNE hunnies for his latest track, “Radar”, resulting in vibes that make you feel like you’re getting serenaded to at a rave in the best possible way. HONNE already has what it takes to keep your hips constantly shaking, but then you factor in Whethan’s signature wonky wobbles and heavy bass into the mix, resulting in your body suddenly being unable to sit still for 3 minutes and change. It’s a shame this came out literally at the end of the summer because this song was built for dancing on rooftops until the sun goes down.

“Radar” comes from Whethan’s forthcoming project Life Of A Wallflower Vol. 1. In the spirit of celebrating this project, Whethan has hit the road making the rounds in the US through the end of October. Dates and more info below!

[SONG OF THE DAY] NAO - "Drive & Disconnect"

After recently dropping songs like “Another Lifetime”, Mura Masa collab “Complicated”, and “Make It Out Alive” (featuring SiR), London songstress NAO has unveiled the name of her upcoming sophomore album, Saturn, along with with a new track, “Drive And Disconnect”.

Per Dork, NAO released a statement (that clearly I didn’t get lol) with an explanation behind the name of the album,

“My friends kept telling me about the term ‘Saturn Returns’. It’s this idea that Saturn takes 29 years to orbit from when you’re born and it is the planet of blessings and growth. So by the time you’re around 29, between 27 and 32, something big happens in your life. It’s like waking up and coming of age, like: ‘I’ve been going through my twenties and what have I been doing in this relationship?’ What have I been doing in this job?’ You start to rethink everything - old stuff that your parents taught you or ideas that you believed in. It’s like a complete shedding of skin and it can be painful.”

Following Saturn dropping on October 26th, NAO will be hitting the road in North America starting in January alongside Xavier Omär. Tickets are available now over on her website.
