[News] Cat Power Announces New Album: 'Sun'
Today saw Twitter explode with the trending topic of Cat Power, who, after a long absence, returned today with the announcement of a new album. On September 4th, Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power, will release her ninth studio album Sun, her first full-length release of original material in over six years. The album saw Chan recording in various locations across the glove, a process that was heavily influenced by her breakup with longtime boyfriend and actor Giovanni Ribisi. When speaking to The Stool Pigeon earlier this month, she said, "I cut my hair off three days [after the break-up], got on a plane to France and finished the shit. It’s all good, you know. I love the person very much. I actually love this record very much, too. I’m very proud of it."
The announcement also came with a fantastic preview in the form of the track "Ruin," which sees Chan channeling her heartbreak in an unexpected way. The song is upbeat, with a piano hook that is catchy and hopeful despite the solemn lyrically content. Check out the song, which is paired with an announcement video, after the jump, along with the tracklisting for Sun.

The b-side for the single, an unreleased track titled "Inaccessible Mystery," has now made its way online, and while it's only a decent quality vinyl rip it's still worth the listen. Check it out after the jump.

[News] The Helio Sequence Announce New Album: 'Negotiations'
Following the release of their fourth studio album Keep Your Eyes Ahead back in 2008, Portland alt-rock duo The Helio Sequence hit the road in support of the release. While on tour in 2009, the pair received a call that their recording space had flooded with over a foot of water, although most of their equipment was safely stowed away in their tour van. The flood meant the band had to find a new recording space, and they landed on a 1500-square-foot cafeteria in an abandoned warehouse. The change in location proved to be more than just physical, as it gave the band a chance to change their approach to recording. Their latest album, titled Negotiations, is the result of this.
Recorded over the past year or so, Negotiations is "the loosest, and most free-form the duo has ever done," with a sound that the band describes as "warmer, more organic and more spacey/ethereal." The 11-track effort is set for release on September 11th via Sub Pop, and to give fans an introduction to the album the duo have released a promotional trailer featuring an unidentified song from the forthcoming studio effort. Check it out, along with the tracklisting for Negotiations, after the jump.
