[Interview] Anand Wilder (of Yeasayer) Talks 'Fragrant World', Drug Culture, and the 'Total Recall' Remake
Yeasayer is one of those bands that relishes in its oddities, embracing the weird and creating wholly unique psychedelic music. Drawing influences from genres and styles from around the world, the Brooklyn outfit can be hard to define, but that is what makes them so good. Since releasing their debut LP All Hour Cymbals back in 2007, Yeasayer have been ever-changing. Experimenting in various ways, the band has explored what makes a song anthemic, the importance, or lack thereof, of hooks and choruses, and with their new LP Fragrant World, they're questioning the "pop" mentality altogether.
Fragrant World, the band's third full-length album, shows a great deal of progression for Yeasayer, with Chris Keating, Ira Wolf Tuton, and Anand Wilder challenging their previous boundaries. The album strays away from the idea of having one or two radio-friendly singles, opting rather for a more complete, cohesive experience. Each song captures a theme or idea, delving into a myriad of off-kilter-yet-catchy instrumentation, yet when placed within the entirety of Fragrant World, every song fits seamlessly. This aspect of the album instantly piqued my curiosity, so when I had the opportunity to chat with Anand, the band's guitarist, I immediately delved into the topic. Meeting at Vancouver's Commodore Ballroom, Anand and I discussed the new album, the importance of festivals, and drug culture in North America and Europe. There was also a lot of discussion about the new Total Recall remake (note: I still haven't seen it). Stream part one and two of the interview below, with part one focusing on music and Yeasayer and part two focusing on random conversation about movies, Total Recall, and the underground tunnels and Wild West attractions of Pendleton, Oregon.
[Watch] Yeasayer - "Longevity" (Official Video)
Yeasayer have taken the title of "Longevity" to heart in the new video for the Fragrant World single, which sees frontman Chris Keating aging slowly over the course of the band's in-studio performance. As the video progresses, Keating's hair becomes gray, his skins wrinkles, and eventually he's just a decrepit skull on top of a body. Watch the replay above.
[Watch] Yeasayer - "Longevity" Live on Fallon
Last night on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Brooklyn's Yeasayer dropped by to perform their track "Longevity" which features on their LP, Fragrant World. In case you missed it last night or just want to enjoy it again, re-watch it at the top courtesy ofThe Audio Perv.
[Listen] Yeasayer - 'Fragrant World' (Full Album Stream)
Yeasayer are offering up a full stream of their third LP Fragrant World, which is set for release on August 21st via Secretly Canadian. But, here's the catch, you'll have to find all 11 tracks yourself. One more thing, they're scattered all across the Internet. Here is the band's explanation, taken from a fan newsletter:
We have received a message that we are on the verge of embargoed information being leaked through the cracks of the digital universe. Once again an attempt to tell the story before our mouths can spit. In order to have the edge we have created PSCYVOTV standing for PREEMPTIVE SELF-COMMISSIONEDYEASAYER VORSTELLUNG or TRACK VISUALIZER.
Using the talents of Yoshi Sodeoka we have created a moving visual for every song on our new album FRAGRANT WORLD and have hidden them all over the internet. The visuals will live on the web until Friday Aug. 3, at 8pm EST. You’ll have a few days to find, listen, and most importantly, hear the album from our hands first. At 8pm sharp PSCYVOTV will be removed.
*Warning: PSCYVOTV may cure depression or boredom.
If you find all the visuals remember the track listing:
1. Fingers Never Bleed
2. Longevity
3. Blue Paper
4. Henrietta
5. Devil and the Deed
6. No Bones
7. Reagan’s Skeleton
8. Demon Road
9. Damaged Goods
10. Folk Hero Schtick
11. Glass of the MicroscopePlease remember, it’s fun to share, but more important to support."
NOTE: We will provide links to the songs as they are discovered.
[News] Coachella Cruise Announced, Brings Hot Chip, James Murphy, Pulp, and More Along for the Journey
Less than an hour ago, we reported on rumors that Goldenvoice, the people behind The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, would be announcing a Coachella-themed cruise, which would set sail in December. It appears the rumors are true.
In December, Coachella will be hosting two separate cruises (they have to keep up with their recent foray into dual weekends), the first being a three-day cruise to the Bahamas starting on December 16th, and the second being a four-day cruise to Jamaica starting on December 19th. Both cruises will sail out of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Prices for the cruise start at $500 per person, which includes cabin, entertainment, and food.
The biggest selling point, though, has to be the lineup, and Goldenvoice have brought in some major talent for their seafaring adventure. Headlining the cruise are Hot Chip, Pulp, Yeasayer, Girl Talk, James Murphy, and Sleigh Bells, with other acts including SKOA favorite El-P, Simian Mobile Disco, Killer Mike, Grimes, The Rapture, Black Lips, Cloud Nothings, DJ Z-Trip, The Gaslamp Killer, and more.
Let us know your thoughts on Coachella's ocean adventures.
[News] Yeasayer Unveil 'Fragrant World' Artwork
Pictured above is the official artwork for Yeasayer's forthcoming third LP Fragrant World, which we've already had a taste of with its two lead singles "Henrietta" and "Longevity." Pre-orders for the album, which is out on August 21st via Secretly Canadian, start today, and the band has outlined the different packages available. Below, you can see the full descriptions of the packages, and pre-orders can be made on Yeasayer's official website, Secretly Canadian, or on iTunes.
1. Uber Deluxe Package: Contains CD/LP/7″/Poster/T-shirt. This is the Yeasayer motherload. What we are really excited about with this package is the extremely limited 7″ (300 copies) that contains the title track “Fragrant World” that is not on the album — backed w/ a “No Bones” remix. This 7″ is pressed with glitter in the vinyl (awesome!) and though it’s possible some of these 7″s may skip you have to remember this is art man!!!
2. CD or LP: For those of you who have enough clothes and are not interested in 7″ singles. Includes free poster.
3. T-shirt only: For those of you who either feel music has no value or you actually visit record stores.
Now, you can bundle the shirt w/ a CD or LP because we like options. We also want to make you happy. So either go for the gusto or choose a la carte. A reminder that the album contains eleven (11) Yeasayer-y tracks and if you need a preview you can hear two tracks via our vignette visions."
[Listen] Yeasayer - "Longevity"
Following up the surprise release of a track called "Henrietta" last month Yeasayer are keeping the momentum, they've announced a new album Fragrant World and a tour to support it. So what's next? Track two from the album that's what. Titled "Longevity" the band have released it with a video accompaniment that you can "take drugs too". Their words not mine!
Fragrant World drops on August 21st via Secretly Canadian.
