[Night Out] The Kills @ Warsaw (04/13/2016)
Ugh. Alison Mosshart, please be my best friend. Like, don't listen to anyone else on the internet who wants you to be their best friend. I mean, you played a show on my birthday, so clearly you are already being a thoughtful future best friend. (Thanks bb!)
Gotta say, there's a very specific type of stylish person that likes The Kills and I was awkwardly not in that majority. I can't imagine wearing a leather jacket to a show, let alone wearing a leather jacket to a show full of people who are also all wearing leather jackets. It was very warm in there, but also very...cool? You get what I mean.
I have now seen my future best friend in both of the active bands that she's in. Not gonna lie, as badass as The Kills are, I like the energy that Jackie White can pull out of her when she's working her Dead Weather magic. I think it's mostly because when you watch her and White singing/shouting in each other's faces you can't tell if they're about to punch each other or make out. The Kills are just more subtle with their awesomeness, I suppose.
Speaking of awesomeness, I spotted so many fantastic humans at this show. Almost immediately once I was through the doors at Warsaw I practically knocked over Jimmy Gnecco from Ours. I also had the pleasure of observing Josh Homme playfully booty dancing with some gal pals of his before accidentally tripping Anthony Bourdain as he exited VIP. If my memory serves correctly they all adhered to the leathered dress code that I didn't know about. *Sigh* Whatever.
Friendly reminder to one and all that The Kills are dropping a new record in just a few months. If "Doing It To Death" and "Heart Of A Dog" are any indication of what's to come, Ash & Ice is going to slayyy forrr dayssss. June 3rd hurry up already!
[Listen] The Dead Weather - "Open Up (That's Enough)"
Over the weekend while in a crowded place I saw via Twitter that The Dead Weather had returned with a brand new single which triggered me to shout "FUCK YEAH!" which resulted in some rather odd stares. Like I give a crap when this band are involved. Third Man Records have already mentioned that the band are preparing to release a full-length in 2015, which sounds like a time far too far away for my liking, which is why my reaction in a crowded place was so extreme.
Jack White along with Alison Mosshart of the Kills, Dean Fertita of QOTSA, and the Raconteurs' Jack Lawrence have dropped a track called "Open Up (That's Enough)" which is every bit as gritty as you'd expect. Distinct guitar tones rattle their way through the mix while Alison chugs on with an ever catchy and punchy chorus. Prior to the aforementioned 2015 album, the band will be releasing a series of singles, this being the first along with the B-Side, "Rough Detective". Check out the A-Side below and if you want to get your hands on a copy then you can do so over at Third Man's magical Vault. A digital version will be released on January 14th which should be marked in everyone's calendar, 'cause it's my birthday. So yeah, more music from these guys would be a very welcome present.
[Listen] Alison Mosshart - "What A Wonderful World" (Louis Armstrong Cover)
Yesterday evening in the States Sons of Anarchy premiered its fourth season on FX and there was a little surprise for the viewers (if you're a little musically inclined that is). Our friends over at TwentyFourBit have pointed us in the direction of this track that appeared in the season premiere and it's from the sultry lady that wails in The Dead Weather and The Kills, of course, I'm talking about the messy haired Alison Mosshart.
Alison has taken on the iconic Louis Armstrong track from way back in '68, "What A Wonderful World". A different approach to the track which is accompanied by an acoustic guitar and whispers of raspy electric trickle into the mix at points along the journey. Check it out below and don't forget to thank 24Bit for the heads up.
[Listen] The Kills - "One Silver Dollar" (Marilyn Munroe Cover)
While in town to perform at this year's Splendour In The Grass festival Jamie and Alison aka The Kills stop by the Triple J studio to play an acoustic version of "Satellite" from their latest album, Blood Pressures, as well as taking on a cover of Marilyn Munroe's "One Silver Dollar". Check out this beautiful cover in the player below and listen to the full spot here.
[Watch] Seasick Steve feat. Jack White, Alison Mosshart, John Paul Jones
What a busy weekend Seasick Steve and JPJ had! First up you can see them performing as part of a surprise iTunes festival gig. The show featured a performance of a host of talent and via TwentyFourBit you can check out this awesome footage of Seasick Steve performing with John Paul Jones, Jack White and Alison Mosshart. They joined forces for a rendition of Mississippi Fred McDowell's track "Write Me A Few Lines". Pretty cool footage.
The reason I say they had such a busy weekend is that John Paul Jones and Seasick Steve were the surprise guests of Foo Fighters' Sunday Milton Keynes show joining the band on stage for a Led Sep cover.
[Watch] The Kills - Live At Glastonbury 2011
