diSKOAver weekly: week of May 3, 2023
Heya cute lil disco babies ✨🪩
Given that we are in the middle of one hell of a Mercury Retrograde (😮💨) and also about to have a major lunar eclipse in Scorpio on Friday that’s all about releasing what doesn’t serve you, I thought it would be helpful to offer the collective some amulets of protection and strength to navigate any particularly prickly moments of reflection that you may experience over the next few days.
I won’t front, it’s been pretty prickly the last few months. As I mentioned previously, I’ve felt stuck in this transitional phase that I’ve been in for awhile and decided to do some digging to see if there was anything that I was missing that was preventing my progress. What I finally allowed myself to see had been in front of me the whole time. If I may be so vulnerable to the void, I will bravely admit that I was toting around some really heartbreaking self limiting beliefs. I was allowing myself believe that:
I am a disposable person 😔
Connection with me is something people can easily let go of 😞
My full authenticity is *too much* and pointless to offer anyone because people will abruptly leave you no matter what anyway 🫥
A relationship with me isn’t worth fighting for 🫠
I’ve been essentially wearing these self limiting beliefs as a pair of prescription lenses that are VERY MUCH NOT YOUR PRESCRIPTION ANYMORE. 👓 For people who have privileged eyesight and have never experienced what happens when the prescription is off on your corrective lenses, it fuckin SUCKS. 😩 You get headaches from the eye strain and all sorts of other micro annoyances until you can rectify the issue and go back to full clarity.
Happy to report that those metaphorical contact lenses have been chucked into the fuckin bin, y’all. 🚮
As a result, I’ve been carefully setting some new boundaries to reflect my restored vision. This morning after meditation I drew the Nine of Wands, of which Jessica Dore’s reflections on that particular card in her book, Tarot For Change: Using The Cards For Self-Care, Acceptance, and Growth just so happen to be about boundaries. 😎
She writes that,
“Ideally what we want is a boundary that’s firm, visible from a mile away but not unwelcoming. There’s a doorway through the wall, but the gatekeeper is discerning and has a zero-tolerance policy for nonsense.”
I liken this line of thinking to that of all things, a bubble. 🫧
Think about it. Visible from a good distance and completely transparent but something that you know if you were to penetrate it you would literally wreck the whole vibe. Furthermore, bubbles are adaptive in more ways than just floating around making Ozzy Osbourne feel less like the Prince of Fucking Darkness. Bubbles can freeze and be rigid and seemingly impenetrable, which while looking kinda cool aren’t as fun as regular bubbles because they’re too heavy to be all floaty and cute. They can also bump into other bubbles and subsequently stick together and float around together in fun new shapes as a result. 🫧
To me, this last lil bitty bit here is ✨the goal✨. Right? I’ve had to learn the hard way that having good boundaries with yourself means only sticking to people who wouldn’t want to burst your bubble, and a good indictor of that is whether or not you actually see a bubble when you encounter anyone outside of your own. 🧐
On communicating boundaries, Dore offers the following (my flair added),
“I often think of communicating a boundary as a bit like getting informed consent from someone. 🫧It’s right to let others know the terms of engagement before they get involved. This keeps you safe, and it also keeps the other person safe from the possibility of your exploding in a fit of rage because you said yes too many times when you should’ve said no. 🫧 It’s scary to be close with people who give indiscriminately without a sense of their own limits.”
Apparently I’ve been in the energy of this bubble metaphor for boundaries for awhile now, because I just remembered this little nugget of wisdom from my chat with Goo Goo Dolls bassist Robby Takac that I’ll leave you with (and obvi my flair again):
"It is what you make it," he said, "It's your bubble man. You're in a bubble when you're out here [on tour] but it's your bubble. Like we say 'life's good in the bubble, man'. You know, for a lot you get to choose what's there and what's not, you know? So we just kind of keep it sane back there, […].”
So much love to all of you. Now go blow some beautiful bubbles already!

#diSKOAverweekly: Week of September 18, 2019
I’ve decided to make more work for myself with diSKOAver weekly! So exciting!
I feel like it’s not fair to the bands I feature in this playlist to not give them the same amount of love I do with all the other features I do so I’ve decided to do a tweets worth of info on each track because after all sharing is caring and boy do I give so many fucks about putting these songs in your hands.
OKAY HERE WE GO!
Moon Boots - “You Won’t See Me Cry (feat. Little Boots)
This cut from the new Moon Boots record is my personal slice of discotastic heaven. The rest of the record is super fun, too.
DallasK - “I Know”
Gonna be honest, kind of embarrassed that I’m just now getting into DallasK but damn I picked a fucking banger to get on board.
Mason - “Rhythm In My Brain”
Honestly it’s not fair that Mason is so perfect. And he’s SO CASUAL about dropping so many bops. This one is SUCH 💥A 💥VIBE💥.
Los Padres - “Boomerang (feat. Nina Sung)”
Holy shit my home state over here making me SO PROUD with this house hitttttttttt. Def gonna be keeping an eye out on this duo for what they do next. 👀👀👀
RAAVE TAPES - “stabs”
I have been OBSESSED with this song since I heard it. They’re like a lovely intersection of The Rapture, Does It Offend You Yeah, Crystal Castles, and Late of the Pier. I WANT MORE DANCE PUNK LIKE THIS. GIVE IT TO ME
CRX - “Walls”
Fun fact: Josh Homme from QOTSA produced this whole record. Love how fucking high energy this is. Oh and Nick Valensi from The Strokes is the singer so you know these dudes aren’t fuckin around.
Tomos - “An Intermission”
If I could float around in space to this I would be pretty hype about it. No, I’m not high.
Cashmere Cat - “FOR YOUR EYES ONLY”
This new single is quite lovely and I’m very happy that they’ll be playing Webby Hall in December.
Sparrows - “Do U Wanna Dance?”
Something about the synths in this makes me think of “Sync” from the FEZ soundtrack but more energetic and that pleases me very much.
Rejje Snow - “LMFAO”
I need to spend more time with Rejje’s last record that this track is from. It’s very much my shit, but I bet you’ll be able to tell why this one was my favorite. 😂
AJ Abdullah - “Oh, the Moon!”
HOW SWEET IS HIS VOICE!? HOW SWEET IS THIS FUCKIN’ SONG!? I’m glad I decided to check my email before I pulled tracks for this week’s update today. This was such a delightful surprise.
MXMS - “What’s My Name?”
This one is a real gut punch. Funeral pop duo MXMS released this on World Suicide Prevention Day and if it doesn’t make your eyes water a little bit you might be dead inside?????????
Sego x Vacationer - “YAH.”
Sego and Vacationer teamed up to cover Kendrick Lamar and it’s just so….. *chef’s kiss*
Hunjiya - “go to bed (feat. Ben Hon)”
My good friend and neighborhood troubadour Jesse Ruben introduced me to Hunjiya (born Alice Kim) when I ran into him on the street a few weeks ago and was like, “you’d fucking love Alice’s music” AND HE WAS RIGHT. Her new EP is FANTASTIC.
Sam Hollis - “Miranda”
I have been sitting on this Sam Hollis jam for way too long (Sorry Sam). Even though he’s homeys with Timi Temple it’s TOTALLY DIFFERENT VIBE A BOY DO I MEAN VIIIIBBBBEEEE.
Hundredth - “Whatever”
So this band gradually pivoted from essentially hardcore to shoegaze and it…..totally fucking works. The older stuff is fine, but they really wear this new direction INCREDIBLY WELL.
IF YOU’VE STUMBLED INTO THIS POST AFTER I’VE SWAPPED OUT THESE TRACKS DO NOT PANIC!! I GOTCHU FAM! You can grab these (and a fuckload more music) over in the archive.
ENJOY! 💖
[SONG OF THE DAY] Sego - "Shame"
You guys Sego is releasing another album and it’s during birthday month and I’m trying my best to maintain some level of chill but let’s be real that’s not fucking happening. lolololol
After stringing us along for a little over a year with tracks like, “Whatever Forever”, “Sucker/Saint”, “Cigarette Kids”, and “Be Alone”, the band has released the lead single, “Shame” from their forthcoming album, Sego Sucks, which drops on April 5th.
Sego Sucks?
Apparently the name comes from a hashtag that someone started not too long after the band was formed. lmao. One listen of “Shame” and you’ll get how omg totes hilar the thought of anyone ever saying that this band sucks.
Alongside the album announcement and single release the band also released a video for the song where you’ll notice that in their downtime that they’ve also upgraded to a four-piece, adding bassist Alyssa Davey and guitarist/keyboardist Brandon McBride.
Also #realtalk: get you a man who looks at you the way drummer Thomas Carroll looks at singer Spencer Peterson. Like please look at the thumbnail on this video! My heart is so full.
Happy Saturday 💖
Tour Dates:
2/8: Los Angeles, CA @ Echoplex (Love You Down w. Warpaint)
3/13-3/16: Austin, TX @ SXSW
4/5: Provo, UT @ Velour (release show)
[SONG OF THE DAY] Vacationer - "Magnetism"
Not sure how I missed that Vacationer was putting out another album but now that I'm up to speed and #blessed to have found the album sitting in my inbox I am happy to report that June 22, the release date for Mindset, is going to be one of the loveliest days of your life. Since I'm still trying to find a better rhythm for SOTD and ease myself back into updating a lot in general, I'm not sure if I'll get to a full review of this album. In spite of that, I will tell you that I have been reaching for this record a lot because listening to it just makes me feel lighter. When approaching this record, Vacationers Ken Vasoli said, "I wrote about concepts that would hopefully benefit my mental wellbeing." So like....he fucking nailed it...at least for me. When it comes to "Magnetism" specifically, there's this dizzying and somewhat hazy energy to the song that is reminiscent of what it's like when you first fall in love with someone.
Be sure to check out the other singles they've dropped from Mindset. "Strawberry Blonde" and "Being Here" are both equally magical. As if you weren't already in an excellent mindset from, "Magnetism", I have even more good news for you: the band will be hitting the road in July with Sego! That's going to be such a nice pairing! Definitely worth every penny for tickets.

[SONG OF THE DAY] Sego - "Sucker / Saint"
credit: Arash Armin
Earlier this week LA duo Sego released their latest single, "Sucker / Saint". The song is a follow up to last month's "Whatever Forever", both which come from the batch of songs the band recorded with Dave Newfeld (who is known for his work with Broken Social Scene).
The band will be supporting Ok Go at their sold-out SF Fillmore show on 11/2.
If you can't make it to any of their upcoming shows, be sure to follow these dudes on The Gram in the meantime. They are quite entertaining to keep tabs on there.
SEGO TOUR DATES:
10/26 — San Diego, CA @ Blonde Bar
11/2 — San Francisco, CA @ The Fillmore*
